Creating an impact

It is easily forgotten that the law was created by humans for humans. From its earliest days Hudson Gavin Martin has been driven by an absolute conviction that the best human practice is the best legal practice. At HGM, you'll have the opportunity to work with some of New Zealand's leading lawyers, gaining exposure to a diverse range of clients from startups, non-profits, NZ corporates to global tech companies.

Why choose HGM?

Our culture is a big part of why people come to work with us. We’re a human firm and are proud of how we collaborate, respect each other and come together to deliver for our clients. Equally, we enjoy all the social aspects of working with such a great group of people.

We are all about expanding horizons for our clients and each other. You’ll get the chance to grow your career alongside some of NZ’s leading lawyers in our field, learning from the best in the business with exposure to a range of clients including startups, not for profit, leading NZ corporates and global tech companies.

In essence, you’ll do great work for great clients with great people.

YOUR PEOPLE ARE OUR PEOPLE

You’ll work as part of a team where you can be you, in a supportive environment focused on setting you up for success. We have an open approach to communication so you get to know what’s going on, and equally you can expect to have input and provide feedback to enhance what we do and how we do it for the benefit of our clients and team.

Your people are our people too, so bring them along to one of our friends & family get togethers, held a few times a year. There’s also plenty of opportunity for connecting as a team – whether it’s through our weekly all-team catch up, team building days, Friday drinks, social events held throughout the year, or just having a coffee with a colleague in our beautiful space overlooking the harbour, you won’t be short of ways to connect with colleagues and have fun while you’re at it.

Being a part of HGM means contributing to our community too, through pro bono work or participating in a range of industry groups. Join us and make a positive impact beyond your day job.

FAQs

Here are some of the questions that might be on your mind.

What kind of career pathways are there at HGM?

You can expect to be supported to grow your career and progress as you develop – both technically and in the way you contribute more broadly to the firm. This will look a little different depending on whether you’re in a legal role or part of our business team, but regardless of which part of the team you work in, your development and career progression is front of mind for us.

When you join HGM, you will receive a comprehensive induction, where you’ll get to know what makes us tick and how to navigate your way around our people, processes and systems. In addition, there will be some initial technical training, tailored depending on your role and career level.

Our internal CPD programme provides lots of opportunity for technical, practice management and human skills development.

You will have a Development Partner assigned to you, so there are regular opportunities to discuss your development – both informally with your Development Partner and more formally through our Development Discussion process.

Do you consider candidates from overseas?

Absolutely, providing you have the legal right to work in New Zealand. If you are applying for a legal role with us, you will also need to be confident you can obtain and continue to hold a New Zealand practising certificate, as this is a condition of employment for all our legal roles.

Do you have a summer clerk programme?

We sure do. For more information about our Summer Clerk programme.

What skills do you require to work at HGM?

The exact skills will depend on the nature and level of the role you’re applying for, but generally we will look at your technical skills, professional skills (e.g., practice management for legal roles) and finally your human skills – team and individual.

Can I send my CV even if there is no role advertised, or the role is closed?

If the role you are applying for has recently closed but you have missed the deadline, please send your CV and cover letter to careers@hgmlegal.com.

If there is no current role advertised, you can email your CV to register your interest for future opportunities, so we can get in touch directly if anything comes up.

What can I expect from the recruitment process?

Our recruitment process will vary slightly depending on the role.‍

Typically, you’ll have a first interview with two seniors or partners, followed by a further interview with two others. We may ask you to do a brief work product assignment if relevant to your role.‍

Reference checking is also a key part of our process. Other background checks (including identity and criminal checks) will also apply, in line with our obligations under Anti-Money Laundering legislation. For legal roles, all offers are subject to obtaining and maintaining a practicing certificate with the NZLS.

We have a separate process for our Summer Clerk recruitment – see our Summer Clerk page for further information.
